The Big Decision

Everyone walks a different path. We want to share just a bit about the path we’ve chosen and share how we came to make the big decision about our family.

Becca and I were married on May 25, 2019 on a hot day in Owensboro, Kentucky. We were fortunate that our wedding weekend included many of things and people that we love — family, friends, places. It is still amazing as we look through pictures the number of people who we were able to celebrate with us from across the United States — even the number of people who couldn’t make it to our wedding weekend but sent along their well wishes to celebrate with us in spirit. It was a memorable weekend that, while a lot of work took place, seemed to flow with ease and celebration all weekend.

We celebrated our honeymoon on a cruise, visiting areas of the world that were only dreams to us. Family and friends came alongside us to help, and we shared as much of the experience as wifi and social media would allow. Once back, we quickly jumped into our jobs and combining our lives. Becca was already a homeowner, so we began the task of combining our belongings, too. That was fun.

In the midst of all this combining and planning, we made the decision to begin working toward building the family we hoped for. Since neither Becca or I are young, by parental standards, we consulted with physicians early on to ensure we were both able and well-prepared for what our path to parenthood would look like. Doctors advised us of some challenges we would face, unique to our situation, and we were determined we would be the exception.

Then came November. After 6 months, we visited with a specialist who, not intentionally, dashed our hopes and dreams of starting the family we originally planned for. Age along with certain health barriers made the likelihood of pregnancy nearly impossible. It was not just the feeling of the rug being pulled out from under us, but the floor falling through as well.

After many long talks, which had begun long before we were married, we made the big decision — we are going to begin the process of adoption.

We talked with families in the area who had adopted and did our research and began the process in Spring of 2020, in the midst of a global pandemic.
